Handmade yellow sunflower ALS awareness bracelet.
ALS or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as "Lou Gehrig's Disease" is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It usually strikes people between the ages of 40 and 70. Approximately 6,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed each year.
Currently there is a campaign underway to adopt the sunflower as the official symbol of ALS. The campaign was launched by Shirley (Hoffman) Schmelzle, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2009 and passed away on January 18, 2016. She explained that "The sunflower stands tall and strong, ever hopeful and ever reaching higher. Sunflowers grow in clusters and support each other as they grow, just as family, friends and community offer support to those who live with ALS."
The bracelet is a yellow leather with a magnetic sunflower clasp.
